Goldberg sale 78, lot 3001

This specimen was lot 3001 in Goldberg sale 78 (Los Angeles, January 2014), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Ecu with 8 L's, 1704-&. Louis XIV. Struck over 1701 Ecu. Cleaned with trace of mount on edge. Fine." The type was struck at the Aix mint until 1709; there are also ¼ and ½ écus struck during this period with this design.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
