Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 42200
SB826-42200r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42200 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $1,342. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1701-O. Riom Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU Details--Reverse Cleaned. Emanating from a SCARCER mint, this slightly cleaned type is overstruck, as are all of the issues of the mint for this year. From the Empire State Collection." Droulers[2] calls this type a louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes (gold louis with 8 L's and insignia). This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. This type was struck at Riom, capital of the Auvergne, in 1701-02.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 25 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dupl. 1443A; Dr/4 № 414, Dr/2 № 270, Fr-436; KM-334.15; Gad-253.
