Sincona sale 101, lot 3159

The first specimen was lot 1136 in Aureo y Calicó sale 447 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 220 € (about US$287 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "s/d. Archduke Fernando, nephew of Carlos I. Hall. 1/2 taler. MBC [very fine]." The second specimen was lot 3159 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$377 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595. 1/2 Taler o. J. (1580-1595), Hall. Hüftbild mit älteren Gesichtszügen und Harnischverzierung mit Gemmen. Walzenprägung. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand II, 1564-95, undated half thaler, circa 1580-95, Hall mint. Obverse: half length bust right with breastplate decorated with gems. Rotated reverse, Rare, About Extremely Fine.)"

Ferdinand was archduke of Tyrol and his control of the mint at Hall gave him access to a large supply of silver which was struck into half thalers, thalers and double thalers. His daughter Anna married the emperor Matthias, reuniting Ferdinand's branch with the main line of the Hapsburgs.

Specification: 14 g, silver, the first specimen 14.07 g. The second specimen is 14.13 g.
