Künker sale 423, lot 58

This specimen was lot 58 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,399 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (posthume Prägung 1601-1604), Hall. Eisenschneider Peter Hartenbeck. Mit TIROL am Ende der Rückseitenumschrift. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz, umgelegtem Mantel und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//Gekrönter Tiroler Adler, oben Ehrenkranz mit fliegenden Bändern. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Leu 27, Zürich 1980, Nr. 4. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated double thaler, posthumous strike, circa 1601-04, Hall mint, with TIROL at the end of the reverse legend. Obverse: armored, mantled and laureate bust right with Order chain; reverse: crowned Tyrolean eagle, wreath above with flying ribbons. About extremely fine.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke. This design, a posthumous issue, was also used for single thalers.
