Künker sale 423, lot 61

This specimen was lot 61 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$13,452 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Dreifacher Reichstaler o. J. (posthume Prägung 1601-1604), Hall. Eisenschneider Peter Hartenbeck. Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Erzherzogshut, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//Gekrönter Tiroler Adler mit der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies auf der Brust und mit Zepter in der rechten Klaue schreitet l., oben Ehrenkranz mit fliegenden Bändern. Von großer Seltenheit. Kl. Stempelfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Hess-Divo 286, Zürich 2001, Nr. 57. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated triple thaler, posthumous strike, Hall mint. Obverse: capped half length bust right with sword and scepter; reverse: crowned Tyrolean eagle with the Order of the Golden Fleece around, scepter in left claw. Extremely rare, minor die defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke. This design, a posthumous issue, was also used for double thalers (Dav-8109) and single thalers.
