Künker sale 423, lot 66

The first specimen was lot 2967 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$2,010 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595 Doppeltaler o. J. Hall. Gutes sehr schön. (Austria, archduke Ferdinand II (1564-95), double thaler without date, Hall mint, good very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 66 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,682 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (posthume Prägung 1601-1604), Hall. Eisenschneider Peter Hartenbeck. Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Erzherzogshut, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//Gekrönter Tiroler Adler, oben Ehrenkranz mit innenliegenden Bändern. RR Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 42, Basel 1997, Nr. 1773. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated double thaler, posthumous issue, circa 1601-04, Hall mint. Obverse: armored and capped half-length bust right, holding a sword and scepter; reverse: crowned Tyrolean eagle, wreath above with internal ribbons. Very rare, about extremely fine.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. None are rare. Künker states that this was struck circa 1601-04.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 57.56 g, the second specimen 57,80 g.
