Sincona sale 23, lot 2964

This specimen was lot 2964 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 17,000 CHF (about US$21,354 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595 Doppeltaler o. J. Hall. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (Austria, archduke Ferdinand II (1564-95), double thaler without date, very rare, very fine.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. This type is noted as a posthumous pattern, so we have attributed it to the year 1595. Künker states it was struck circa 1601-04.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.32 g.

Catalog reference: M.T. 309, Dav-8117.
