Künker sale 293, lot 1547

This specimen was lot 1547 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,200 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (posthume Prägung 1601/1604), Hall. Stempelschneider Peter Hartenbeck. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit prachtvoller Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated double thaler (posthumous issue of 1601-04), Hall mint. Engraver Peter Hartenbeck. Scarce in this quality, very attractive example with exquisite patina, minor edge defects, extremely fine.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. This type is noted as a posthumous pattern, so we have attributed it to the year 1601.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.97 g.

Catalog reference: M./T. 313 (Stempel 2/1), Dav-8111.
