Sincona sale 76, lot 1381

This specimen was lot 1381 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595. 2 Taler o. J. (posthume Prägung 1601/1604), Hall. Stempel von Peter Hartenbeck. Fast FDC. NGC UNC Details. Vorderseite minimal gereinigt. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand II, 1564-95, undated double thaler, posthumous strike, Hall mint. Dies by Peter Hartenbeck. About uncirculated, Obverse lightly cleaned.)"

Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. This type is noted as a posthumous pattern, so we have attributed it to the year 1601.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 57.37 g.

Catalog reference: Moser/Tursky 315 (Stempel 4/3). Dav-8116.
