Ensisheim in upper Alsace. The political situation is of 1477, on the collapse of the Burgundians. Upper Alsace would be ruled by the Hapsburgs until 1648 when it passed to France.

This specimen was lot 33388 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Archduke Ferdinand 2 Taler ND (1564-1595) MS61 NGC, Ensisheim mint. Younger portrait type. A gripping presentation that benefits enormously from the ideal centering of the obverse, capturing the intricate edge device in full. Presently the sole certified example, this piece shows the diagnostic obverse die cracks endemic on this younger portrait type, its heftier flan allowing for a greater relief to be expressed in the devices that is utterly charming." Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. None are rare. Compared to the similar Dav-8093, the archduke's breastplate has extra rivets and his name is spelled "FERD·" instead of "FER·".

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 56.84 g.
