Künker sale 423, lot 46

This specimen was lot 46 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €700 (about US$991 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. 1/4 Reichstaler o. J. (1580-1595), Hall. Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Erzherzogshut, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//Gekröntes, mehrfeldiges Wappen (Ungarn, Böhmen / Kastilien und León / Österreich und Burgund), mit Mittelschild (Tirol), umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. R Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Münzkontor Frankfurt 21, Frankfurt/Main 1978, Nr. 694. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated quarter thaler, circa 1580-95, Hall mint. Obverse: capped and armored half-length bust right, holding a scepter and sword; reverse: crowned manifold arms of Hungary, Bohemia, Castile, Leon, Austria and Burgundy with the escutcheon of Tyrol, Order chain around. Rare, extremely fine.)"

Ferdinand was archduke of Tyrol and his control of the mint at Hall gave him access to a large supply of silver which was struck into half thalers, thalers, double thalers and even a few quarter thalers. His daughter Anna married the emperor Matthias, reuniting Ferdinand's branch with the main line of the Hapsburgs.
