Austria (1594) 2 thaler Dav-8107A
This specimen was lot 53 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,832 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand, 1564-1595. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler o. J. (vor 1594), Hall. Eisenschneider Valentin Koska. Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Erzherzogshut und Löwenkopfschulter, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff//Gekröntes, mehrfeldiges Wappen (Ungarn, Böhmen / Kastilien und León / Österreich und Burgund), mit Mittelschild (Tirol), umher die Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Dorotheum 462, Wien 1992, Nr. 858. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, undated thick double thaler, Hall mint. Obverse: Armored and capped half length bust with scepter and sword and lion's head on shoulder; reverse: crowned manifold arms of Hungary, Bohemia, Castile, Leon, Austria and Burgundy with the escutcheon of Tyrol, Order chain around. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8120, all without dates. Most are common. This design was also used for a triple thaler (Dav-8106). Double thalers Dav-8096, Dav-8098 and Dav-A8100 are very similar but on those, the legend on the reverse is interrupted by the crown.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 57,21 g.
