Austria (1564-95) 3 thaler Dav-8115
The first specimen was lot 2963 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR/ÖSTERREICH, Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595 3 Taler o. J. Hall. Sehr selten. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (Austria, archduke Ferdinand II (1564-95), triple thaler without date, very rare, very fine or better.)"
The second specimen was lot 3084 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Ferdinand II. 1564-1595 3 Taler o. J. (1601-04). Hall Posthume Prägung. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Henkelspur, hübsche Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand II, 1564-95, undated triple thaler, Hall mint, posthumous issue. Extremely rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Removed loop, nice patina.)"
Davenport notes a considerable number of thalers and multiple thalers struck for the archduke, Dav-8088 thru Dav-8103, all without dates. This type is noted as struck posthumously.
