Steve Album sale 38, lot 3796
Mexico SA38-3796r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3796 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $357. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR 5 centavos, 1874-Pi, assayer H, tiny edge flaw or rim nick at 9:00, recut "5", toned, VF to EF." This specimen is from a series struck 1870-97 at the Potosi mint. This date is listed as scarce by the SCWC and is priced nine times higher than a type coin (1887-97). Even so, this example realized triple the catalog value. Assayer H is listed for 1874-81.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.903 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, .039 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-398.9.
