Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 40354

Shown is an 1873-M^O M 2½ pesos gold piece, of a type struck at Mexico City 1870-92. The second specimen was lot 40354 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $4,148. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2-1/2 Pesos, 1873/2-Mo M. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-63. Fr-148; KM-411.5. Bold overdate. Bright lustrous and attractive. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. All known specimens are the overdate, 1873/2. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common for the type.

Specification: 4.23 g, 0.875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.
