Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 40352

The first specimen was lot 1440 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $632.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 2½ Pesos, 1872 Mo M/C. Mexico City. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Rv. Value in wreath. The fields show some reflectivity and the legends show minor softness from the strike. No surface problems distract the eye, with good color and pleasing surfaces throughout. Choice About Uncirculated." The second specimen was lot 40352 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $4,392. The catalog description^[2] noted, "MEXICO. 2-1/2 Pesos, 1872-Mo M/C. Mexico City Mint. PCGS MS-63. Rare overassayer. Only seven in PCGS Census with only one finer, and none in NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. All of the 1872's seem to have the repunched assayer. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.
