This specimen was lot 24435 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1872-PiO. NGC MS-63. Very difficult mint to locate in top grade. Second finest graded at NGC with none in mint state at PCGS. Good strike with soft satin luster and a real prize for the advanced collector of this series. From the Alex Siegel Collection." It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Guadalajara (scarce), Mexico City (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Durango (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 1,873,000 (assayers O and H).
