Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was lot 6492 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010). It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This issue from Chihuahua is the only reasonably common date for the mint. A second assayer "M" is recorded which comprises the bulk of the issue. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Durango (scarce), Mexico City (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Guadalajara (rare), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 747,000 for assayers M and P (nearly all assayer M).
