Mexico 1872-Pi O 10 centavos

This specimen is a very scarce date of a series struck 1869-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8969 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $195.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 10 Centavos, 1872-PiO. Slightly weak strike, toned and very attractive. EXTREMELY FINE."

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
