The first specimen was lot 11364 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $2,232. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Oaxaca. Centavo, 1872-Oa. NGC EF Details--Scratches. VERY RARE. Multiple old scratches, but still attractive." The Oaxaca mint, which struck this type 1872-75, is widely recognized as the rarest mint for one centavos and decimal minors in general. The five and ten centavos are scarce and twenty-five and fifty centavos don't exist. The second specimen was lot 73432 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. Centavo, 1872-Oa. Oaxaca Mint. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, AU Details. A VERY RARE issue from the Oaxaca mint. Upon consultation with archived auction results, the last auction appearance of any kind occurred in our November 2012 where an example with EF Details--Scratches brought a hammer of $1900."
