Mexico 1872Do peso rev 600.jpg

Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales.

This issue from Durango is among the rare dates. The variety shown here, with assayer "Pt" instead of the usual "P", is among the keys of the type. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Oaxaca (scarce), Mexico City (common), Chihuahua (scarce), Guadalajara (rare), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 296,000 (assayer "P" and "Pt").

Catalog reference: KM 408.2.
