Shown is a balance scale fifty centavos, of a type struck 1869-1895. This issue from Culiacan is a rare date, priced five times the value of an 1881-Cn. Like many rare dates, those few that do appear are usually in low grade. Other mints include Hermosillo, Zacatecas, Durango, Mexico City, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Alamos and Potosi. A second assayer, G, is noted for the year, with about the same rarity. The second specimen was lot 9157 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $460. The catalog description[1] noted, “MEXICO. Culiacan. 50 Centavos, 1882-CnD. Rare date, toned. Edge nick, attractive. NGC AU Details--Edge Damage.”

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .393 troy oz ASW.
