Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 605

This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1871-92 at the Culiacan mint, which closed in 1905. There is a second assayer, "M", recorded for 1882 but this product is so rare that the SCWC assigns it no price. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. The second specimen was lot 9064 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $690. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 25 Centavos, 1882-CnD. Ex: Richard Meyers Collection. RARE date and possibly the finest known. One small field nick. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The third specimen was lot 605 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £220 (about US$341 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[2] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 25 centavos, Culiacán mint, 1882 M, crudely struck, with various scratches and marks, only fair or very good, very rare."
