This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1880-89 at the Guadalajara mint. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. The Guadalajara mint is probably the scarcest of the ten mints that struck this type; this date, the rarest for the mint, is still priced about five times a common Guanajuato or Mexico City issue. The SCWC notes that all known specimens are the overdate, 1883/2-Ga B/S. The second specimen was lot 9079 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guadalajara. 25 Centavos, 1883/2-GaB/S. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."
