Shown is a copper-nickel five centavos, of a type struck 1882-83. As an experiment, the Mexico City mint issued copper-nickel one, two and five centavos, which were swiftly rejected by the populace. Mintage was suspended in 1883 and in 1886 the mint was forced to resume striking copper one centavos and silver five centavos. The next two centavo piece would be issued in 1905, along with a nickel five centavos rather similar to this type. The 1882 five centavos is common, the 1883 is rare.
Specification: copper-nickel.
Recorded Mintage: 40,000,000 for 1882-83.
