This specimen was lot 70499 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1883-Pi MH. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Highly brilliant and blazing, this specimen is largely untoned and without color, save for a few areas of burnished iridescence on the reverse." The San Luis Potosi mint opened in 1827 to process local ore and struck eight reales until 1893. The mint eventually struck all the silver denominations but never gold, altho patterns exist. For 1883, the SCWC notes only the normal date and an 1883/2 overdate, which obtains a slight premium. Assayer MH is listed for 1873-85.
