Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70767

This specimen was lot 70767 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $552. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1883-Oa AE. Oaxaca Mint. NGC AU-58. Rather charming, this borderline Mint State example features a dappled assortment of lilac, blue, and gold tone over the surfaces. A slightly SCARCE date that is surprisingly elusive in the quality." The output of the Oaxaca mint was generally small compared to the other mints. However, enough of the later dates were saved that they are reasonably available. This date is only slightly scarce.
