from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 72315
SB1025-72315r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72315 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 50 Centavos, 1883-Zs S. Zacatecas Mint. NGC EF-45. Finest of only three examples graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." This type was struck at Zacatecas 1870-87. Unlike the five or ten centavos, the early dates are more common than the later dates. This one is uncommon, verging on scarce. A repunched mintmark, 1883-ZS/ZA S, is reported (which may have been a die borrowed from another mint such as Chihuahua or Guadalajara) but awarded no premium.

Recorded mintage: 31,000.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, 30.5 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-407.8.
