Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 594

This specimen is a scarce date of a series struck 1869-93 at the San Luis Potosí mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. Most Potosi mint ten centavos prior to 1887 are scarce or rare. This specimen was lot 594 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £70 (about US$109 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 10 centavos, San Luis Potosí mint, 1883 H, metal flaw running through the coin apparently caused by extraneous material in silver alloy, otherwise very fine, rare."
