Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74630

This specimen was lot 74630 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1882-Do JP. Durango Mint. NGC MS-62. This sharply struck coin exhibits lively, flashy luster and pleasing almond to russet toning that intensifies toward the peripheries." Altho the Durango mint never achieved the mintage totals of Zacatecas or Guanajuato, most of the dates after 1873 are available or common. Of the two assayers for 1882, assayer MC is priced about twice that of JP. An overassayer, MC/JP, is reported. The Durango mint closed in 1895.

Recorded mintage: 414,000 (assayers JP and MC).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
