The first specimen shown is an 1871MoM balance scale twenty pesos, of a type struck 1870-1905. It was lot 348 in Ponterio sale 135. This issue from Mexico City is among the more available dates. Other mints include Hermosillo, Culiacan, Durango, Zacatecas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato and Alamos. The second specimen was lot 1386 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 20 Pesos, 1871 Mo M. Mexico City. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Rv. Cap and Rays above scales of Justice, dagger, and scroll of laws. 21,000 minted. Well struck save for a small section of the rim which is a tad soft, but the devices and lettering are all sharp. Lightly hairlined. About Uncirculated."
