This specimen was lot 72309 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1871-Ho PR. Hermosillo Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Gold Shield. Variety with large horizontal "O" over small vertical "O". Very lightly cleaned, this example otherwise presents great charm and brilliance, and even offers a hint of golden toning. In addition to the over mintmark variety, another interesting aspect of this issue is the use of the same large horizontal "O" on the head of the eagle, acting as an addition eye punch." This date is scarce, along with the 1871/0 overdate. Most of the mints were striking the new balance scale peso in 1871.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.9; DP-Ho13.
