This specimen is a rare date of a series struck 1871-96 at the Culiacan mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This date is listed but not priced in the SCWC. This specimen was lot 8922 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Culiacan. 10 Centavos, 1871-CnP. VERY RARE date and possibly the finest known. Normal weak strike, planchet flaw. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.
