Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 647

This specimen was lot 647 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £600 (about US$929 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "Decimal Coinage, 5 pesos, Guanajuato mint, 1871 S, extremely fine, scarce." The Mexico City mint issued a steady series of this denomination 1870-1905 and there are a few available dates from Zacatecas and Culiacan but the other mints (Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Hermosillo) are all rare or uncollectible. This is the most common of the four known dates from Guanajuato.
