This specimen was lot 72067 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $366. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1858-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC AU-58. "1R" error. Scarce date. Only example graded by NGC. Although cataloged as an error "1R" denomination, this cataloger believes that the denomination is a poorly punched 1/2 as the fraction bar is visible below a small "1" and only a blur below that. It seems that all 1/2 Real 1858 Culiacan were struck from the same dies. Nevertheless, this is a condition rarity for the date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Culiacan mint struck half reales 1846-49, 1852-63, 1867 and 1870 and most dates are scarcer than the catalog indicates. Assayer CE (Clemente Espinosa) is listed for 1846-70.
