Ponterio sale 150, lot 9063

This coin was lot 9063 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1858-ZsMO. SCARCE first-year issue for this mint. Well struck, lustrous. Dipped. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The Zacatecas mint struck this type 1858-71. The SCWC gives this date about a 25% premium over the later dates of the 1860's. Zacatecas was a prolific issuer of all denominations of silver but the gold coins are not so common.
