This specimen was lot 1345 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $402.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. Escudo, 1853 Zs OM. Zacatecas. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. An ex jewelry coin with moderate abraded surfaces and a couple of weak areas on the edge reeding. Greenish-gold color, an average strike. First year of this denomination from this mint. Very Fine. This date is not listed in Richard A. Long's reference and appears to be an oversight as this date and mint are noted in the Krause Standard Catalog." The Zacatecas mint struck this type 1853, 1860 and 1862 and this date is priced by the SCWC at double a common Mexico City issue.
