Mexico 1853-Go PF escudo
This specimen was lot 1337 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $103.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. Escudo, 1853 Go PF. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Pleasing surfaces for a moderate amount of circulation with even yellow-gold color and no scrapes, but a shallow dent noted on both sides. Slightly weak strike. Choice Very Fine." The Guanajuato mint struck this type 1845-62 and this date is priced by the SCWC only 25% higher than a common Mexico City issue.
