SB224-73189r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73189 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1853-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details. Coin Axis. Though it exhibits some softness of strike and a few faint toolmarks, this piece makes a satisfying example considering the SCARCITY of the date." Altho the Guadalajara mint was opened in the early days of the War of Independence, the early dates of the cap-and-ray eight reales are all rare. The first affordable date is 1832 and the first common date is 1859. Assayer JG operated 1836-63. This is a somewhat scarce date. An 1853/2 overdate exists and is awarded a premium.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.6; DP-Ga35.
