The first specimen was lot 72088 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $129. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1853-Do CP. Durango Mint. NGC EF Details--Damaged. Only example graded by NGC. Damage consists of a number of dings on obverse and reverse that are subdued by the toning. Less obvious because of fine attractive dark toning. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." The second specimen was part of lot 72096 in the same sale, where it sold for $195.20. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Duo of 1/2 Reales (2 Pieces), 1845 & 1853. Durango Mint. Average Grade: VERY GOOD. 1) 1845/1-Do RM. 2) 1853-Do CP. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Durango mint struck half reales 1832-34, 1837, 1841-64 and 1869 and quite a few dates are rare. Assayer CP (Carlos de la Peña) is listed for 1853-73. This date is listed in the SCWC as common. It is one of the few dates with no varieties listed.
