Künker sale 354, lot 5706

This specimen was lot 5706 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €400 (about US$557 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, - als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. 1/4 Reichstaler 1727, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod in Osnabrück am 12. Juni. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 64, Osnabrück 2001, Nr. 4692. Am 3. Juni 1727 trat Georg eine Reise von London nach Hannover an. Er erreichte Delden am 9. Juni. Am nächsten Morgen wollte er weiter nach Osnabrück, in der Gegend von Ibbenbüren erlitt er jedoch einen Schlaganfall und starb am 12. Juni im Schloß Osnabrück. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, as George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, one quarter thaler of 1727, Clausthal mint, on his death at Osnabrück on July 12. Extremely fine. On June 3, 1727, George embarked on trip from London to Hannover. He reached Delden on June 12th. The next morning he intended to continue to Osnabrück, but in the Ibbenbüren area he suffered a stroke and died on June 12th in Osnabrück Castle.)"

George I's death was marked by the issue of an eighth thaler (KM 176), quarter thaler (shown here), half thaler (KM 183) and thaler (Dav-2082).
