Hannover 1726-CPS thaler Dav-2073
This specimen was lot 22688 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover. Taler, 1726-CPS. George Ludwig (1698-1727). NGC AU-58. Well struck, lightly toned, highly lustrous and quite attractive." This type depicting the stallion of Saxony is recorded for 1725-27. The obverse shows the arms of Great Britain, assumed when the duke became king George I of England on the death of Queen Anne in 1714. Closely related types preceded (Dav-2072, struck 1718-24) and succeeded this coin (Dav-2086, struck 1727-49). The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
