Hannover 1727-CPS 1/2 thaler
The first specimen was lot 2621 in Sincona sale 57 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, Herzogtum, Georg Ludwig (Georg I.), 1698-1727. 1/2 Taler 1727, Clausthal. Auf seinen Tod. Sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1727, half thaler of 1727, Clausthal mint, on his death. Very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 5705 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,619 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, - als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. 1/2 Reichstaler 1727, Clausthal, auf seinen Tod in Osnabrück am 12. Juni. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 110, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 4540. Am 3. Juni 1727 trat Georg eine Reise von London nach Hannover an. Er erreichte Delden am 9. Juni. Am nächsten Morgen wollte er weiter nach Osnabrück, in der Gegend von Ibbenbüren erlitt er jedoch einen Schlaganfall und starb am 12. Juni im Schloß Osnabrück. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, as George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, half thaler of 1727, Clausthal mint, on his death at Osnabrück on July 12. Very scarce in this quality, fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated. On June 3, 1727, George embarked on trip from London to Hannover. He reached Delden on June 12th. The next morning he intended to continue to Osnabrück, but in the Ibbenbüren area he suffered a stroke and died on June 12th in Osnabrück Castle.)"
George I's death was marked by the issue of an eighth thaler (KM 176), quarter thaler (KM 181), half thaler (shown here) and thaler (Dav-2082).
