Hannover 1727-EPH thaler Dav-2076
This specimen was lot 73582 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1727-EPH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (George I of Great Britain). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, EF Details. This coin's dove gray surfaces are mixed with other subtle gray hues and warmed by a thin layer of champagne. The noted obverse scratch is shallow. Flan metallurgy has given the surfaces a somewhat porous appearance. Light wear. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." The year 1727 marked the death of George I and the accession of George II, instigating the issue of many thalers. This is the final date for this wild man thaler, first struck in 1716.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
