Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 30242
SB822-30242r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30242 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1727-EPH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. Struck during the first year in the reign of George II of England (who was also the Elector of Hannover), this deeply toned crown presents a great deal of originality and a solid strike, with the lion-and-unicorn supporter coat-of-arms rather familiar to any collector of British coins. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Frankfurter Muenzhandlung 137 (11/1991) Lot # 1317." This "wild man" thaler is one of fifteen different thalers struck for Hannover in 1727. It was also issued in 1728-29 and is fairly common. Georg II August succeeded his father in 1727, accounting for the plethora of types. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2090; KM-196; Welter-2553.
