This specimen was lot 22441 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Marco Polo 50 Yuan, 1993. SELECT PROOF. Struck to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the return of Marco Polo. Brilliant with hard mirror fields and frosted cameo devices. Very faint handling would prevent elite certification." Marco Polo has been featured on a number of Chinese commemoratives:

  • 1983 silver 5 yuan (KM 76).
  • 1983 gold 10 yuan (KM 78).
  • 1983 gold 100 yuan (KM 80).
  • 1984 silver 5 yuan (KM 77).
  • 1992 silver 5 yuan (KM 467).
  • 1993 silver 50 yuan (shown here).
  • 1993 gold 500 yuan (KM 83).

Recorded mintage: 1,500 proofs.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine silver, 5 troy oz ASW.
