This specimen was lot 52087 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $13,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nearly Perfect Invention of the Yin and Yang Commemorative. CHINA. 100 Yuan, 1993. Inventions & Discoveries Series II. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the Ying & Yang philosophy, featuring the Chinese Gods: Fu, Lu, and Shu. A tremendously beautiful example, this nearly perfect example delivers enticing cameo contrast and is certain to be a hit with any specialist in the series." Other 100 yuan issued in 1993 include KM 477 (panda), KM 480 (silver panda), KM 513 (platinum year of the rooster), KM 514 (silver year of the rooster), KM 515 (gold year of the rooster), KM 516 (gold year of the rooster), KM 523 (world cup of soccer), KM 534 (chairman Mao), KM 535 (Sun Yat-sen), KM 539 (Soong Ching-ling), KM 551 (Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy), KM 574 (Bronze Age Sculptures), KM 592 (Mt. Tai), KM 598 (two peacocks). This one features the gods Fu, Shu and Lu and the design also appears on a silver ten yuan (KM 493), gold 25 yuan (KM 495) and fifty yuan.
