China 1993-P 10 yuan KM-478

This specimen was lot 74271 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Silver 10 Yuan, 1993-P. Panda Series. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. An attractive, near perfection example of this issue with brilliant surfaces and cameo design details. The obverse has a light champagne toning on the periphery, enhancing its appeal. Comes with original box of issue." This is one of an extensive series of NCLT's struck in silver, gold, platinum and palladium featuring the panda. This series debuted in 1983 and is still in production after hundreds of types. Other ten yuan for 1993 include KM 474, 485, KM 486, KM 493, 494, KM 510, 511, 520, 524, 525, 527, 537, 538, 540.1, 540.2, 547, 548, 563, 564, 584, 585, 586 and 587. As a departure from usual practice, multiple panda designs were used (KM 478, 485, 486).

Recorded mintage: 120,000 of KM 485 plus 2,500 of KM 486 plus 20,000 with "P".

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine silver, 40 mm diameter.
