Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 55898

This specimen was lot 55898 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Gold 50 Yuan, 1995. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo." This NCLT marked the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. It accompanied a gold 500 yuan (KM 817). Hong Kong's liberties were initially respected but eventually the regime's authoritarian tendencies won out and Hong Kong's freedom was crushed.

Recorded mintage: 11,800.

Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.500 troy oz AGW.
