Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 51415
SB421-51415r.jpg

This specimen was lot 51415 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $45,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Stunning Low Mintage 5 Ounce Gold Unicorn Issue. CHINA. 500 Yuan Gold Proof, 1995. Unicorn Series. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. A VERY RARE and popular issue. A brilliant 5 ounce gold Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices. Serial number on rim at 12 o'clock reads "13". Often times the translation of Qilin from Chinese to English is "Unicorn", but this is somewhat misleading as they can be found depicted with one or two horns. In modern times a separate word "Dujiaoshou" is used in Chinese for "Unicorn" and though a number of Chinese mythical creatures can be found depicted with one horn a Qilin with one horn would be called a "one-horned Qilin" in Chinese not a "Unicorn"."

This NCLT is the second in another long-running series of commemoratives in addition to the panda and Chinese zodiac programs already in progress.

Recorded mintage: 99.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine gold, 5 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-B101; KM-805; NPB-14a.
